Hagg signed his ELC at 19, so he needs 4 years of AHL/NHL experience to get arbitration rights, right now he's at 2. And he'll be able to be a UFA in 4 years (when he's 27).

I think.

So a 2 year contract gets him to arbitration rights, not really a big deal, and a 4 year deal gets him to UFA status. So I would say 2-3 year deal max so that he's still RFA at the end of it. I don't think either one makes a big difference, but I don't want to give him much more than 2M per. I like Hagg, but as a 5 or 6 dman, PK specialist type guy. Certainly needed, but not something to overpay for.

The sorta nice thing about Hagg is he's definitely a defensive first guy. Typically those guys come a little cheaper.
3yr -$6,000,000 sounds about right.
Sanheim is an RFA next year.
Moran is an RFA in 2021.
Myers and Frredman are RFA's in 2020.

$2 mill for a solid 4-5 for 3 years isn't bad. Reevaluate in 3 years.

I think (read: desperately hope), the Weise deal was Hextall's 'learn from it' mistake. Fortunately he hasn't gone in to free agency and signed a depth guy to a long term since then. That's just not a good move.
We will start to see what product is on the ice in 60 days from now

Chy i have a trade show at Yankee stadium today compliments of WB Mason and the give us a tour of Monument park then bring us into the dugout after visiting the clubhouse. After that a VIP lunch with a guest speaker. Last time it was Aaron Boone.

Yep. Quiet time in the NHL. Probably not much happening until September. Ugh.

Does Simmer deserve an extension? I say unless you could get a rel sweet deal on him, I say he deserves to be here. He def needs to put it into over-drive this season and be a dominate presence, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and injuries plagued him last year. He really needs to learn how to stay healthy for all the right reasons.

I look at Simmonds as a year long rental that you don't have to acquire. You play out the season, see how it goes, and if you like what he provides, try to sign him between the end of the season and July 1.

IMO, he absolutely deserves a nice contract. Good money, long duration. But I would be afraid to do that. A long term deal for a guy that will be 31 when the first game is played on that contract, plus he plays a game that's tough on the body. I don't want any part of 34, 35, 36 year old Wayne Simmonds over like 3M/year. If he's willing to do like 7M for 3 years, I'd probably do it. If he's willing to do 3M for 7 years, I'd probably do it. But some team out there will give him like 7M for 7 years and I just don't think that's a good idea. (All this assuming last year was an injury-related anomaly and he returns to form)

That being said, I'm willing to 'lose him for nothing' next summer to have him on the team this season and avoid giving him a contract we regret in 3-4 years.

Agreed. They'll also have the ability to move him at the trade deadline if the team as a whole isn't performing up to expectations. Personally, I don't see a place for a $6 mil+/yr winger on the bottom 2 lines. Not good cap management. No way I'd go more than 4 years for him regardless.

From NHL.com:

What they still need
Improved penalty killing. The Flyers have ranked in the bottom third of the NHL on the penalty kill the past four seasons, including 29th last season (75.8 percent), and were 80.0 percent (20-for-25) in six games against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference First Round. The 217 power-play goals allowed the past four seasons are nearly a quarter (24.1 percent) of all the goals they've given up since 2014-15. The Flyers like to expand their box and pressure the points, so one solution could be giving more shorthanded ice time to younger, speedier forwards Scott Laughton, 24, and Taylor Leier, 24. They killed penalties early in the season, but coach Dave Hakstol eventually shifted away from them and became overly reliant on slower Jori Lehtera and Filppula.

Listed to the Meltzer/Therien podcast that Hextall was on, sounds like he's thinking along the same lines. Talked a lot about term when they were discussing Simmonds' potential contract. "Teams out there that are willing to go term, we have to be careful with term" ish.

Sounds promising.
