Of course.

But anybody they bring in on a 1 year deal is not making a huge impact.

The Lakers could make the playoffs without bringing in a difference maker, but they won't be projected as a 6-8 seed this year if that is the case.

Because, who of these teams are they passing:

GS
Houston
NO
OKC
Utah
Portland
SA
MIN
DEN

Then, teams like Memphis will bounce back somewhat and Phoenix looks to be on the rise too.

There are easily 12 teams in the West that would be no doubter playoff squads in the East given a healthy season. The West could be even tougher this season than it was last. The Lakers could conceivably have a worse record with a better team if they keep it in tact.

If Dallas gets Cousins or a decent C they will have a good starting 5.

They very well may have won 42-43. Which would have left them 5 games shy of making the playoffs.

Sometimes that jump from just outside the playoffs to actually in the playoffs can be pretty darn big too. Especially when you have a bunch of young guys who have never been involved in a playoff race.

Not really sure what your point is. This is basically what I said, just with more words.

So the current team which won 35 games last year and no longer has Lopez or KCP will somehow vault up to being a 6-8 seed? Seems pretty unlikely.

Yeah, young teams never improve right? Especially when their core missed a combined 80+ games due to injury.

This summer can be a disaster for them if LBJ/PG doesn't go there.

Lebron is going likely drag out free agency as always. His decision likely doesn't come until July 7th or 8th so if he doesn't choose them, there is a great chance that Randle isn't waiting that long to sign an offer sheet with another team

I don't think a heat fan should be talking about having a disastrous summer right now...

So the lakers would be the only team in the west improving.

New Orleans, Denver, and Minnesota won't get better?

Right.

I was agreeing with you and countering @Shaqdaddy11 who said they would be projected to be the 6-8 seed without adding anybody.

They could make the playoffs in that case, but no way in hell they wouldn't be projected there. Probably projected 10 or 11.

This:

"From what Magic has said, if they strike out this off-season, they will preserve their cap space, develop the kids some more and be back to big game hunting next off-season."

Lost in all of this Max FA stuff has been Randle. Folks forget that his signing is not pressing per se. The reason? He is a restricted FA and so the Lakers can match or exceed any offer he gets. He is not an unrestricted FA and so he is not being deliberately abandoned by the Lakers and he is not walking with the drop of the first offer either. On the contrary. The Lakers will probably sign him to an extension if all the max guys stay put with their present teams.
