Talk of Mason Raymond should have the obligatory words "Spengler Cup" somewhere in the same sentence.
Joke all you want about Raymond and Spengler Cup, but Raymond is just the type of veteran Bob Murray likes to bolster Randy Carlyle's roster with. Hell, I think Raymond was on the Ducks last year or the year before that. And the last Spengler Cup winner's captain was also a Bob Murray pick up.

Randy had Raymond the Mason playing first line minutes here, so...

Wait a tic, is Barry boarding a plane to Santa Ana?

Just arriving at that gate ... probably connecting flight to kelowna and predator ridge ... and he’s almost dressed for the clothing optional hour at sparkling hill spa and resort tonight after 9pm

Cap space is a hockey asset.

SJ got the cap space to add + that 2nd for an asset they had no interest in keeping around.

Ottawa gets a guy who hasn't topped 40 pts since 2014, joining a moribund team whose current roster goal is to meet the cap floor. They could've moved him to Florida, gotten the cap space and used it for other teams to park their bad contracts. The salary wouldn't have mattered because instead of going from Hoffman's to Boedker's they'd be going from Hoffman's to whatever the next move is.

Or, to put it simply:

You really think that if the Sens decide to sell at this deadline that Boedker wouldn't get at least a 2nd? I think he would. Cap space/money is only something useful if you think that you can use it to pay a good player. I actually think that the Sens will be hard pressed to get a better UFA than Boedker for $4M. It doesn't get you much these days. Considering that he only actually gets paid $3M and I doubt they can sign someone for $3M as a UFA who is a surefire better player than Boedker.

In a sane world with a sane GF, Hoffman should return much more than Boedker and a former second rounder AHL player. But it isn't a sane world. I'm OK with this all things considered. If Ottawa had traded Hoffman for some not-so-magic beans (2nd, 4th and 5th) I'd be kind of pissed.

As for Hoffman being some great game-changing player, well LOL. Despite being well-known as the biggest douche going, he was one of my favourite players to watch. Great highlight real goals. But he hasn't been a driver of play in a few years. Since his rookie year he's become increasingly in need of others to get his chances. He hasn't been great 5-on-5 for a couple years now. I'll miss that shot and that speed but even at his best he was always a high end complimentary player rather than a true core guy. It's not like Ottawa is going to tank all of sudden because they lost Mike freakin' Hoffman.

They'll likely tank for much more idiotic reasons (cheaping out on Karlsson, keeping Boucher, etc.) but Mike Hoffman being gone doesn't mean that the season is lost.

Or, you know, for the reason I mentioned.

Also, in a season where he scored 51 pts Boedker was moved to Colorado for Tanguay's corpse and two nothing prospects, neither of whom was drafted higher than the 3rd round.

Maybe he's worth a 2nd at the deadline. But if Ottawa wanted a 2nd why didn't they just trade with Florida then?

Because even as daft as Dorion is he knows that a good NHL player is worth a lot more than a 2nd?

He's.

Just.

Negotiating.

Bob did the same thing and was signed to a bridge within 3 days. Worst case is Panarin thinks he can squeeze more money with a blowout season and doesn't want to commit to what was probably the Jackets initial offer.

But if the Pens want him it will only cost Malkin and Kessel.

When you're giving us Mathews and Marner for Panarin, all that's left for Philly is Nylander and Komarov.
I hope you're right. I'm trying to stay "positive" but I keep seeing stuff and my pessimistic side takes over.

Panarin has long future with Blue Jackets, GM says

Jarmo should hopefully calm you down a tad.

"Artemi is an elite National Hockey League player," Kekalainen said. "Our position has been that we want him to be a Blue Jacket for many years, and that has not changed. He has a year left on his contract, so there is plenty of time to work toward that end. Should anything change moving forward, we will address it at that time and any decision we make will be in the best interest of our club."

Let's recap:
Jackets GM: "we want him to stay for a loong long time"
Breadman's agent: "There is no point commenting on it"
Panarin: <silence>
Clickbait whore reporter: "OMFG WHARRRRGARBL"

Also the agent specifically said he isn't going to talk to Portzline about it. He isn't going to comment at all, but especially not to Twatwaffle. Let that sink in.

I heard Jarmo's comment on the radio yesterday. Still a little nervous.
