Cargo on Netflix is a solid zombie flick, nice change of pace/original concept with the saturation of the zombie genre. I believe it's based on this short film:

Old school:
Young Frankenstein
Army of Darkness
Beetlejuice
Ghostbusters
Gremlins

New School:
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland
Tucker & Dale vs Evil
Cabin in the Woods
Housebound
Cooties

I'm watching "The Frighteners" right now. Directed by Peter Jackson and starring Michael J Fox. Pretty fun movie, very underrated.

It's not "Shaun of the Dead" (that one is IMO the best Zombie movie ever, regardless of genre or tone), but it's very entertaining.

The Strangers: Prey at Night. Not a fan of it. The fact they were in a seemingly abandoned trailer park took me out of it. The added bonus that I didn't care if anyone died was another.

I did try and watch a couple as I was drifting off that might have been worthwhile, but I fell asleep through parts.

Will revisit parts of Desolation and A Dark Song.

Did catch some good 80s camp the other week in Deleria, basic 80s slasher, but replace the summer camp with a play (pretty sure they were practicing a play, maybe it was going to be another type of show).

Caught Wake Wood, it had it's moments, but ultimately fell flat. That's about it for my recent ones. Oh, I did start Raw one night, feel it's about to get really crazy, I was tired, so figured I'd save it for a later time.
Just watched Strangers: Prey At Night last night and wasn't a fan of it either. So many issues with it and some absurd stupidity. Very bad writing all around.

Looked at Desolation because it was on Netflix, but opted for a different movie. Will probably give it a go next time.

There's a good reason that you fell asleep during A Dark Song. That was one hell of a slow burner with very few hooks. If you manage to make it to the climax then it gets fairly interesting. The acting was pretty solid even though it was overall a very strange movie.

Watching this on Youtube right now.

Wish Upon (2017) - IMDb

Rather formulaic Horror movie about a music box that grants 7 wishes....

Clare Shannon (female named Joey King) is an unpopular kid who misses her mom (she committed suicide) and gets a music box from her dad Jonathan Shannon (Ryan Phillipe) who hunts for junk in dumpsters.

The box grants wishes and she goes for all the ones an unpopular kid would want, money, the cute/popular guy at school, etc.

The pacing is a little slow at the beginning and the acting is just okay.

While it's somewhat predictable and a little slow at the start, I'd give it a 5/10. It's worth watching, depending what else is on.

I thought so too. You know everything that is going to happen but still a decent enough film.

Finally got around to watching A Quiet Place, solid solid movie. Very clever, pretty original. A great twist on dystopian, society has crumbled horror.

Strangers: Prey At Night (2018)

I was very disappointed with this movie. The writing was simply awful. First off, as Taddy pointed out, the setting was a farce. How is there nobody else alive in this seemingly ginormous trailer park? The victims run for miles and never seem to get out. Are we supposed to assume that everyone is dead in this trailer park town & there aren't any major byways with traffic? Sure its late, but it's not like this family is parading around the trailer park at 3am. Not to mention the noise & screaming doesn't seem to attract any attention. Stupid all around. Next, the character stupidity was absurd. Some of the deaths seemed way to forced (the mom & police officer) and were more about setting a tone than presenting a conflict. And I was really annoyed with the progression of events with each character. The sister primarily. She went from being completely inhibited by injuries to suddenly saving her brother & thwarting off an attacker in a blaze of glory. The brother had his moments too when trying to help his sister. Overall there wasn't much to enjoy with watching the cattle run around. It did have some redeeming values. The film had a decent score and the bigger budget which gave it a good array of filming styles & ample amounts of gore. And even though he didn't put up much of a fight, I thought the pool scene was pretty cool. But sadly those things didn't amount to much in the face of all the bad writing. This was a very poor attempt at a sequel.

Piss-poor writing... 4/10

I liked it overall, but there was one plot point I didn't like that just nags at me.

When Holmes escaped from the cage with the kid, why did'n't they just shoot the guy? He clearly was an asshole that killed a lot of other people. Even if they successfully snuck out, they know he would come looking for them, not to mention, why leave what is already a very well fortified setup to look for another? Similarly, I don't get why the girl didn't just off him earlier herself, guess she felt she needed him to survive.

Thought the same exact thing.

Do you mean the enter key? As in, spacing it out in separate paragraphs?

I didn't watch the short you posted, but I guess that's how one goes from a short to a feature.

since horror comedies were mentioned recently, guess this is why this works as a trailer, but would never be able to carry 90 minutes (though others have tried).

While we are sort of still on the subject of Horror Comedies... Thought I'd share this one that I watched a few months ago:

They're Watching (2016)

The concept of this movie starts out as a parody of Home Network (with a dash of MTV Cribs) mixed with a standard haunted house which was pretty hilarious. Then it quickly turns into a standard found footage film, of which it primarily focuses on to throw its comedy punches. Essentially the movie is a spoof on American reality TV. Pretty sure even the title presents a comic muse for us Americans (the viewers). This film pokes fun at witch legends around a small town, local freaks, rednecks, foul-mouthed Americans, character stupidity, cheesy cgi, and more. The humor was executed well, however it was pretty dry and a little few & far between which made the entire experience a little dull. The writing was a little anticlimactic. Not sure what they were trying to achieve but maybe that was simply poking more fun? The bloodbath ending was pretty silly, in a bad way. The acting was decent enough for horror comedy. Kris Lemche (Ginger Snaps & Final Destination 3) brought the foul mouth to the crew, which aided in some of the funnier moments. And even the twisted performance by Brgid Brannagh as the Martha-Stewart-esque Witch was pretty funny. Overall it was an ok horror comedy. A little dull but it has some clever moments that anyone could appreciate.

Can't love it or hate it, just meh... 5.5/10

Just watched a little low budget film called They're Watching. Left being happily surprised but it is a seriously mixed bag.

A film crew for a house remodel/lifestyle relocation show heads to Moldova to follow up on a lady who bought a crappy house in the woods some months earlier.

The show starts with a bang, but it turns out to only be a foreshadowing of what actually occurs much later.

Despite the excellent first minute, things quickly devolve into a boring waste of time as the film crew of 3 (2 guys, 1 girl) cruise around Eastern Europe making stupid jokes at the expense of the locals. In fact, this goes on way to long as essentially the story does not progress for quite awhile.

At about 40 minutes you thinks things will move forward but it turns out to be only minor progress. It really isn't until about 70 minutes that things take off. But when they take off, they really take off!

The last 25 minutes starts out by turning into something along the lines of a 70's Hammer film, then it shifts gears and goes into Army of Darkness on meth with SyFy channel fxs. It is actually pretty cool!

Another schizophrenic film with the first 2/3rds being a total waste of time with about a 3.5 rating, and the last third being a crazy-assed 7.5 or so. Overall I give it a 6 because the highs come at the end and you leave it with a good feeling.

My recommendation: Watch the first 5 minutes, then skip forward about 35 minutes, then watch it with one eye for half an hour or so, and then give it full attention until the end.

Disembowlments, bodies exploding, frog attacks, people being ripped in half, etc.etc. They basically use up the whole budget on the finale.

Glad I searched the thread to see if anyone had mentioned it before. Found you're review @jakedog56 ! Agreed with all the above!

Pretty sure @Taddy Mason & @Nasty_Magician are the only ones that have confirmed that they've seen it. Although @DJ was warning us not to see it because a "friend told him it was bad" :rolleyes2:
