I see the upside with Scrabble. I really do. I just ALSO see the upside with Leake...

1) He would not have cost a pick
2) He would have been 15M cheaper (makes getting that stud LF/CF easier)
3) His bat is legit. If he accounts for a run every 3rd start, that is a drop of approx .4 from his ERA
4) His age. His contract with St Louis only takes him through his age 32 season

I understand that Scrabble probably has a higher ceiling. I also understand that "value" only goes so far. Every WAR point is not worth the same.

I am not crying over my beer over the swap. I am just saying, ASSUMING THE GIANTS COULD HAVE HAD THE SAME CONTRACT, I would have preferred Leake to Samardzija.

From our vantage point, I would agree. However, the Giants had a REALLY good look at Leake in 2015, and they obviously weren't overwhelmed. And vice versa.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but in the FO we trust.

1. The pick is a nominal consideration for me.
2. The 15M spread over five years isn't going to materially effect the decision to get a FA OF
3. He won't account for a run every third start
4. The age differential is nominal.

I'm good with SammyJam instead of Leake. Now, if we could have Leake instead of Peavy...

Thanks. I will in February.
One piece of unsolicited advice:

Know negligence inside and out. in 2004, it came up on 4/6 of the essays, both of the practical exams and all over the MBE.
A: Actual damages
B: Breach of duty
C: Causation - actual and proximate
D: Damages

good luck

A blogger on another board raised a decent point about the SF OF situation. He said that if we don't acquire an OF for 2016, that come 2017, the only proven OF we'll have is Pence, and that we will have to get BOTH a CF and a LF for 2017, and that puts us in a bit of a bind, raising risk. Both Pagan and Blanco will be FA's after 2016. Presumably we would not re-sign Pagan, and there is no guarantee that Blanco would re-sign with us. I thought that was a good point.

It is a good point. But it also assumes that both Mac and Parker are flops.

Chili Davis, Jack Clark and Gary Matthews.

Before Posey, who was last catcher the org developed?

Before Panik, who was the last 2B the org developed?

Before Crawford, who was the last SS the org developed?

This is a different development team than before. Granted, they focus on pitching and infield, but they have a few OFers in the system who actually have decent ceilings.

So Bobby Evans agrees with me, but three amateur bloggers don't.

Good to know.

??

You never stated an opinion. You just said there was a good point on another site (that I said WAS a good point, btw).

And where has Evans stated that the Giants are unable to develop an OFer?

Bobby Evans on where we go from here:

Giants GM On Bobby Evans On Left Field, Bullpen

"given our commitments in pitching, I think now is a good time to look at left field and versatility there has value for us,” Evans told MLB Network Radio (audio link). “We look at [Gregor] Blanco and, he’s been our starting left fielder in the World Series and our starting center fielder in the 2014 World Series so we don’t want to dismiss his ability to help us for a ton of at-bats and a ton of games but if we could put him more in a fourth outfield spot, we feel like we would be stronger.”

When discussing the possibility of further additions this winter, Evans pointed out that the team still has “flexibility” to spend..."

$$$$$$$$$

Bobby has been reading my posts.

It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to infer the obvious point that Evans doesn't expect Mac or Parker to bump Blanco to the #4 spot. Could it happen? Of course. And I could win the next Presidential election. Please be real. Hoping even one of two untested, low-ranked prospects can become a rotation regular on a WS contender is not the stuff of elite FO actions.

Hey, I hope I'm wrong here. But I wouldn't bet the season on you all being right.

Mays, of course this is a possibility. Its also a possibility that the Giants need three starting pitchers next year as well. From my perspective, this is a worst case scenario. It assumes that neither Parker nor Williamson are able to contribute. It assumes the Giants don't trade for an outfielder like they did years ago for Pence. It assumes that the outfield free agent crop in 2016 will be much worse than what is currently available (which is possible, I don't know who will be available next offseason).

Looking at next offseason, the only guys who will be free agents after 2016 will be Blanco, Pagan, Jake Peavy and three bullpen arms (Lopez, Casilla and Romo). Depending on how the minor leagues fill in those positions, all the Giants may need to sign next offseason is an outfielder and a relief pitcher. If they need to get two outfielders next year it won't be the end of the world.
