Broncos minicamp Day 2 observations

In addition to those mentioned in this article, DC Joe Woods says that Jeff Holland is “blowing people away”. Apparently he is filling up the highlight film.

Hopefully Holland makes up for Shane Ray. I mean hopefully Ray makes up for Shane Ray, but you get it.

Shane’s playing time will likely be diminished big time this year. With the door wide open for Chubb to start, if he is as good as most people think, it’s unlikely Shane will ever be a starter here again. Of course it’s always good to have depth, but injuries probably spell the end of Ray’s time here in Denver after this year.

At best I am hoping for Ray now just to come in and be a good situational/rotational pass rusher... Hoping Holland steps up and when Ray walks at seasons end (which looks likely at the moment) it makes us look back and cancel the two out. Feel bad for Ray though. 4 wrist surgeries. We really thought we got a steal in Ray falling out of the top 10, but doesn't look that way right now. Sucks but we're at least easing into moving on if we have to after this year. Ideally, would be nice if Chubb dominated like Von Miller and Shane Ray got healthy and stuck around as a rotational pass rusher, but if he has any type of bounce back year after his injury he will get more money elsewhere. I just hope Ray can get healthy and have a decent NFL career even if it isn't in Denver long term.
Hoping Holland can keep up his play and transition it into NFL games.

With as well as Barrett seems to be doing, and with the addition of Chubb, I think Shane's days are numbered.

Glad he turned things around after leaving school though.

Dymonte was getting love in this article as well; loved that kid last year.

Dymonte Thomas will be interesting. We have Simmons and Stewart obviously as our starters. Parks struggled a bit when called upon last year but looks sorta like a David Bruton type of player for us. Special teamer who can backup either safety spot, start in a pinch but may not be a long term solution at safety. Then there is Jamal Carter who was great last year in PS and in games was active all year playing mostly a role on special teams. We seem to really like these top 4 and not sure we keep 5 S’s but it is possible. Also possible if Carter slips at all Thomas could find an opening this PS there. Thomas came onto the active roster late last year and was probably of all our late season PS to active roster additions the most impactful on special teams, IMO. I felt like a lot of our late season call ups to the active roster didn’t make much of an impact, but Thomas did show a bit of swag. He and Rios actually did pretty decent when called upon in the last game of the season.

At this point with both Holland and Barrett looking like quality depth I really wish Ray was healthy so that he could become a bit of trade bait. Maybe he will become a trade deadline kind of guy for the Broncos. I wish him well but it definitely seems like others are rising up in his absence and the Broncos are moving forward a bit without him.

I'm thinking Shane Ray trade to the 9ers - later in the season.

IMO, we don't end up trading Ray. His value is so low right now after his last surgery... Might not be worth a trade id rather see if he has anything left after his injury then trading him away right now, and if he starts to step it up during the season he is probably worth hanging onto if we are winning with a good pass rush. Total hunch and opinion on my part. Not saying the others are wrong. Just my theory on him.

I'd like to see Shane get a shot at being a full time pass rusher somewhere he's truly needed.

I don't mind keeping him around at all as you can never have too many pass rushers on a team. I'm just guessing right now though that by the time he does get healthy the other guys will have already established themselves so going to be tough to find really any kind of reps unless there is another injury to the position.

Right- I understand why you would want to trade him. I just think his value is way too low right now for what we would get in return. Might as well just keep him and see if he busts out at all this year. He showed signs the year before last year (his 2nd year) but his injuries have really held him back. Maybe a 4th surgery is a charm (wishful thinking) but I think compared to the value in return he is worth keeping over a late round pick right now. Unless we have an injury or net a worthy (not great, not expecting that) OL for him then he could be worth a player for player trade.

Can't disagree with any of this. You are probably right his value will be too low. I would say right now if they are winning then keep him around as insurance at a very valuable position. If they are losing around the trade deadline then maybe see what you can get.

They may actually get more out of Ray as a comp pick then in a trade.
