I think Irving is better as a PG(passer, ball-handler, distributor), but Curry is the best shooter I've ever seen!

Kyrie Irving is a better ball handler. Might be the best ball handler ever.

But he is nowhere near Steph in terms of passing and distribution skills. Not even close.

Well they all suck anyway

The only good, TRUE PG's are Oscar, Stockton, Muggsy Bogues, Nash, Isiah, the Glove, Doris Burke, and Mo Cheeks.

Honorable mention to my homie from Run TMC, Timmy Hardaway

Rubio is a pure point. Probably the purest point guard since Stockton.

I think Nash and Curry are a great comparison. Nash is probably a little better at passing and Curry is definitely better at creating his own shot. Both incredible shooters, both not too great on defense. I would say Curry is better though, and not too many star PG's can say they have 3 titles.

Agreed.

I just don't see a legit case for ranking Nash ahead of Curry. Based on what?

Curry is as good offensively, better defensively and he has 3 rings.

First off, Curry isn't a true PG. He wasn't even at Davidson.

Once you come to that conclusion you automatically come to the realization that Kyrie is a true PG and better passer, set up man, distributor, facilitator, and overall PG.

But I will also concur that Curry has made himself a great passer and distributor of the ball, otherwise he could never had been MVP

All completely false. Because Kyrie is not a better passer, distributor, facilitator or set up man.

Kyrie is not a true PG either. He never has been. He is a scorer.

And whether or not Curry was a PG at Davidson is completely irrelevant. He is now.

If Kyrie was on the Warriors team what position would he play? Alongside Curry? He would most definitely be the PG and Curry would be SG, hell Durant even plays a bunch at PG on the Warriors team, but Curry is more a SG rather than a PG! He just is!

Kyrie is more of an SG than a PG. neither player is anything close to a true PG. LeBron always played point with Cleveland, not Kyrie. And while KD and Dray will sometimes dribble the ball upcourt, that does not mean they are the PG. If Kyrie were on GS, I am quite sure that they would share the responsibility, but that Kyrie would play more off the ball because Curry is the more willing passer of the 2.

Your entire argument can be summarized like this:

"Curry is not a true PG, so Kyrie is a better passer".

That is the worst argument ever. First, because Kyrie isn't a true PG either, and second, even if he were that does not automatically make him a better passer. James Harden isn't a true PG, but he is a fantastic passer when chooses to pass. You don't have to be a pure PG to be a good passer.

Do you have any facts to support your case?

Only once in Kyrie's career has he averaged more than 6 assists per game (6.1 the year before LeBron) and he averages about 8 assists per 100 possessions with a 30% assist rate and about a 30% usage rate.

Curry on the other hand, hasn't averaged below 6.1 assists since 2012 when he was battling the ankle issues. He averages 9.7 assists per 100 possessions with about the same usage rate as Kyrie and a higher assist percentage (32.3).

I challenge you to find even one stat that backs up your assertion that "Kyrie is a better passer because he is a true PG".

You are correct that Curry isn't a "true PG", but Kyrie isn't either. Not even close.

@tlance

I posted Kyrie vs Curry because they are arguably close to each other in every stat-

For the purpose of this comparison, I’m going to say the most vital aspects of being a point guard are points, assists, and steals. Typically, those are the main things you look to your PG for in a game. Maybe even rebounds depending on who it is (i.e. Westbrook, Jason Kidd, Rondo). But a bigger comparison may be who are their teammates- Durant or James. But that's another argument too:

So let’s compare the career stats of these guys:

Kyrie Irving

21.4 ppg

5.5 apg

1.3 spg

3.4 rpg

Steph Curry

22.7 ppg

6.8 apg

1.8 spg

4.4 rpg

Based on these analytics, it would seem that Curry is the better PG as he has superior stats in all categories. However, not by much. They are basically neck and neck in all these categories and it’s really difficult to say who’s the better all around player. Kyrie, in my opinion, is a much better finisher in transition. Curry, however, is arguably one of the greatest three point shooters of all time and he has teammates who finish. So, again this comparison is very close.

But you are correct that neither is a traditional PG, which is the OP's thread question about Curry.

They both had amazing handles. But Kyrie is right there with them.

I’d say Magic and Stockton are better. I never considered big o a pg, but I get why people do. I’d say he’s neck and neck with IT right now. I’d take him in an instant over Nash, Kidd, or Payton.

At this point no, but he's on a solid trajectory to be considered there one day. I think right now I'd have him around 5-7. Still think guys like West, Kidd, Payton, Isiah all should be considered ahead of him due to their distinguished careers. The MVP awards help Curry's case, but he'll need 5-7 more years of dominance/titles/current pace to be considered at 3.

Pretty much this. His peak is already top-3... he just needs longevity at this point.

Not being a PG hurts Curry in the rankings.

It also hurts LeBron, but he's ahead of Curry.

If he can get a Finals MVP under his belt, that would go a long way.

2 time league MVP. 3 time NBA champ. Arguably the greatest shooter of all time.

Magic is still the king. And Oscar Robertson is probably No. 2. But is there a PG you would put above Steph after that? Nash? Stockton?
Let me clarify, I am not detracting from how great of a player he is. But can you truly call him a point guard?

Then why do we keep using the same nomenclature?

If Dirk didn't post up, defend, or rebound, how can he legitimately be called a PF? He's an over-sized 3-Guard when you break it down like that.

Trust me, as the undisputed #1 Golden State fan in the world, I loves me some Curry, but I don't call him a 1/PG
Agreed, Curry is a shooting guard in a midget's body
