Greatest fielding second baseman of all time. My grand parents were at game 7 in Forbes Field when Maz took down the Fraudkees. Don't fuck with Maz. He's in the HOF for the same reason Ozzie Guillen is.
Wait, Ozzie Guillen is in the Homophob HOF. I meant Ozzie Smith.

Ozzie Smith was at least a good offensive shortstop for the time as well though. He had an above average OBP in 11 seasons while being a really good baserunner.

Mazeroski was never above average offensively at anything.

do ANY other sox fans here remember the sox playing STL in spring training...wanna say 94 or 95, one of his last years.

a guy came out of the stands dressed in a full cardinals ozzie uniform, ozzies shades on, same beard.,..took his spot at 3rd. no one noticed til ozzie strolled out of the dugout and tried to take his spot at 3rd.

anyone?

Ozzie Smith was a much better offensive SS than Maz was an offensive 2B. Not really close at all.

Maz' offensive WAR never topped 2.6 for any season, and had just 3 seasons with it over 2.0...Smith by comparison had 10 seasons with at least a 2.6 offensive WAR and 13 seasons over 2.0.

And even more telling, Smith had more 4+ offensive WAR seasons than Maz had overall 4+ WAR seasons (which includes his great defense).

Okay so that answers the question, you're talking about the last 15-20 years. That I don't disagree with. I don't think "last 15-20 years" when I hear modern era.

Still doesn't mean Pedroia didn't deserve the award.

Dustin Pedroia is a whiney gay elf and his brother bangs saplings.

how the fuck did dick groat beat out willy mays, eddie matthews, hank arron and frank robinson for an MVP?

i never saw that MVP list from 1960 before. holy shit.

robinson led the league in OPS, OPS+ and slugging that year...and finished tied with something called a larry sherry and a smokey burgess, with 2 votes.

its burned into my memory. i remember it clearly. remy said something like "theres an ozzie at short, but its not the right one" and this guy, standing in ozzies spot, ready to field, as ozzie stood next to him at short waitng for security.

A player who is not a DH will spend half of his career playing defense. Maz has the most defensive WAR for a second baseman of all time. He belongs in the HOF. If he doesn't then defense does not belong in baseball.

Yeah, so? Why should I give a fuck if a SS from the 80s and 90s was a better offensive player than a second baseman from a pitcher's era in the 50s and 60s?

BTW - you which guy opposing managers and pitchers were more worried about when he came to the plate?
Maz: 110 intentional walks in 2163 games.
Oz: 79 intentional walks in 2573 games.

If Maz had done a back flip and hadn't played in baseball purgatory, everyone would love him and he'd have been a first balloter.

Smokey Burgess: wasn't he Sean Penn's surfer dude sidekick in Fast Time at Ridgemont High?
